NEW CASTLE — Neshannock Township police remind residents not to provide personal information and credit card numbers to strangers.
In the past few weeks, police said, they had two complaints from residents who had received calls from individuals claiming to represent Microsoft Windows.
The victims are told their computer is “at risk” and the problem can be fixed providing the victim allow the caller access to their computer over the Internet.
However, once logged on, the scammer downloads the owner’s personal files and locks the computer.
The caller then demands a credit card number to unlock the computer and give documents back.
Police said in both incidents reported, the caller was described as a man with a foreign accent.
According to the Internet, this type of scam has been going on for several years all over the country.
Police advise anyone who receives a similar call to just hang up.
