House fire under investigation

NEW CASTLE — A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed an Ellwood City home.

Ellwood City Fire Chief Rick Myers said the blaze appears to have started in the basement of the two-story apartment building at 622 Wayne Ave.

Two people live in the building, but they were not at home at the time of the fire, Myers said.

Firefighters received the call at 10:04 a.m. Tuesday and were on the scene until about 1:15 p.m.

The property is owned by Mary H. and Thomas E. Fray, according to the county assessor’s office.
