Man charged for drugs in jail

NEW CASTLE — An East Side man is facing drug-related charges for allegedly trying to smuggle heroin into the Lawrence County jail.

New Castle police have charged Lance Tyler Shaffer, 25, of 127 N. Cascade St. with two counts each of possession of contraband, possession of a controlled substance and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

They received a report from an adult probation officer who had taken Shaffer to jail. During a search of his belongings, the officer said, jail personnel found a cellophane wrapper in his wallet containing a folded lottery ticket with suspected heroin and a roxicodone pill.

He is being held on an additional $1,500 bond.
