College campus to close in response to threats

NEW CASTLE — The Butler County Community College at Lawrence Crossing will be closed Tuesday.

Following a bomb threat this week and the threat of additional violence at the Union Township campus Tuesday, school officials made the decision to close the facility that day, according to Susan Changnon, executive director of communications and marketing.

This will result in the rescheduling of final exams planned for Tuesday. All other finals dates will remain the same throughout the week.

Changnon said that instead of Tuesday, those tests will be offered a week later, on May 13. The times of the exams will remain the same.

For students who are unavailable that day, May 10 is being provided as an alternative date, Changnon said, adding students have been alerted to the changes.

“College officials were advised by federal law enforcement officials to close the campus location for safety reasons,” Changnon said. “Our academic deans talked to faculty members about adjusting the final exam schedule for that day.”

Students who have a conflict with the rescheduling dates are advised to meet with their professors to make an alternate arrangement. Changnon also encouraged students to talk to instructors about any concerns they have regarding safety at the facility.

She noted the campus already has added additional security, and this will continue for an indefinite period of time.

“BC3 is doing everything it can to ensure the safety and protection of its students, faculty and staff,” she said.

Regarding the threats, Changnon said the school is working with the Union Township Police Department and the FBI in an effort to locate the perpetrator. She said that to the best of her knowledge, no suspect has been identified.
