NEW CASTLE —
A Lower East Side man was arrested for allegedly firing a gun in the city.
New Castle police said they were called to Pine Street around 2 a.m. Friday for a report of a gunshot.
Jahmia Jahmel Ward, 21, of 209 N. Crawford Ave., the alleged shooter, was caught in the parking lot of a nearby convenience store and police confiscated a black Hi-Point .45-caliber handgun from his pants pocket. The gun was loaded with a .45 caliber round in the chamber and seven rounds in the magazine.
A box of 10 rounds was in his backpack. Ward told police he “bought the gun off the street.” Police found one spent bullet in the middle of Pine Street that matched the rounds in Ward’s gun.
A caller told police Ward had been walking down Pine, stopped in the middle of the street, fired a shot in a southern direction, then ran.
Ward is charged with carrying a firearm without a license and violating a city ordinance by firing a gun.
He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie and lodged in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.
