Damage forces shutdown of bridge on Route 422 bypass

NEW CASTLE — A portion of the Route 422 bypass westbound in Lawrence County was closed Tuesday because of bridge damage.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the bridge that carries the highway over the Shenango River, west of the Route 168 exit was found to have structural damage.

The damage was discovered Tuesday morning by crews that were painting the bridge. Cracks were found in a support beam.

Westbound traffic was being routed onto Route 168.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
