NEW CASTLE —
A Mercer woman was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown following a crash early Saturday in New Wilmington.
Police theorize road rage may have contributed to the accident.
New Wilmington police said Megan E. Roddy, 18, had to be extricated from her 2003 Pontiac Sunfire following the 1:25 a.m. accident. She was listed in serious condition Saturday morning. Attempts to reach hospital officials Sunday night were unsuccessful.
Police said Roddy was westbound on East Neshannock Avenue when she attempted to turn left into a private driveway. Her vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Sean K. Catterson, 21, of Frederick, Md. He also had been westbound on East Neshannock, behind Roddy.
Roddy suffered apparent head injuries and was unconscious, police said. She was removed from the vehicle by the New Wilmington Fire Department.
Catterson and a passenger in his vehicle, 20-year-old Brandon A. Ferrari of New Wilmington, were not injured. Police said Catterson failed field sobriety tests and was taken to Jameson Hospital for blood alcohol testing. Authorities are awaiting the results.
Both vehicles had passed a New Wilmington police officer conducting a stationary patrol just prior to the crash. According to police, the officer had begun to follow Catterson’s vehicle in an attempt to stop him because of excessive speed when he came across the crash.
Police added their preliminary investigation indicated road rage, excess speed and alcohol impairment all may have been contributing factors in the crash.
The Pennsylvania State Police CARS Unit from Butler was summoned to map, photograph and reconstruct the crash scene. Also assisting were the New Wilmington and Volant fire departments, Neshannock Township police and state police from the New Castle station.
East Neshannock Avenue was closed for nearly six hours because of the crash.
