NEW CASTLE —
No chickens crossed the road yesterday morning in Slippery Rock Township.
But a box truck hauling about 37,000 pounds — 18 tons — of processed chicken did.
The truck was going west on Route 422 yesterday when it hit a bridge just before 5 a.m. The truck traveled across the median strip and hit the other side of the bridge, stopping in the eastbound lane.
A witness said the truck, owned by Hobbs Inc. of Viola, Del., did not overturn and did not spill any of its load.
However, its undercarriage was damaged and the truck lost about five gallons of fuel oil on the highway, the witness said.
The Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to clean up the spill, which occurred near near McConnell’s Mill State Park.
The eastbound lane was closed for about three hours afterward.
No injuries were reported.
Attempts to reach the state police for further details were unsuccessful yesterday.
