Husband, wife charged in shoplifting scheme

NEW CASTLE — A husband and wife are in jail after being caught in two alleged merchandise return and shoplifting schemes at Walmart.

Stephanie A. Huffman, 38, and Noel S. Huffman, 43, both of Asbury Manor, Meadville, were arrested by Union Township police yesterday at the office of District Judge Jennifer L. Nicholson where Noel Huffman was scheduled to appear for a traffic violation. His wife was with him.

Police charged them with multiple counts of retail theft, conspiracy to commit retail theft and receiving stolen property in connection with alleged incidents in the Union Township store on March 2 and April 9. Noel Huffman’s retail theft charges are felony counts, while his wife’s are misdemeanors.

Nicholson arraigned both of them on the retail theft-related charges, setting Stephanie’s bond at $1,000 and Noel’s at $5,000. Both remain in the Lawrence County jail.

Police said the charges followed a seven-month investigation by officers and included video surveillance of the couple in the store.

The Lawrence County commissioners have decided to solicit proposals for the private operation of the county jail. Good idea?

Yes. If it’s a more efficient way to run the jail, I’m all for it.
No. I think there would be too many questions of liability for the county.
Not sure. The county seems to be doing a good job of running the jail now. Why break it if it’s not broken?
