NEW CASTLE —
Plans are in the works for replacement of the Koppel Bridge.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will brief the public about the project at an open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24. The presentation will be at the Koppel Volunteer Fire Department on Fifth Avenue.
The Lawrence County commissioners received notice of the meeting because the bridge, located on Route 351 in Koppel Borough, serves as a main artery for traffic to and from Ellwood City, Wayne Township and Ellport Borough, commissioner Dan Vogler noted.
The proposed project involves replacement of the bridge with a new four-span steel multi-girder bridge to be located just downstream from the existing bridge.
The new structure will have two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. The work also includes replacement of about 800 feet of road leading to the bridge on both sides and construction of a retaining wall on both sides of the southern approach.
Traffic is to be maintained during the project, except for about two months when it will be closed for tying in the new approach roads. A detour will be posted then.
A briefing for public officials is planned for 3:30 to 5 p.m. the same day as the open house. A design of the proposed bridge will be presented by ms consultants inc. of Pittsburgh.
