NEW CASTLE — A Shenango Township brush fire kept multiple departments busy for hours yesterday afternoon.

The blaze, which broke out around 1 p.m., spread through fields and woods bordering Sankey Hill Road, Boyd School Road and Lower Boyd School Road.

At the scene, Shenango Township Fire Chief Dave Rishel noted that when he first arrived on the scene he did not know how bad the fire was. He ended up having to drive through flames to get out of the fire.

“It's funny now,” he said, “but it wasn’t then.”

Shenango Townhip police were interviewing a resident of the area who was believed to have been responsible for starting the fire. However, police said last night they could not release the man’s name, nor did they indicate if the fire had been ignited accidentally.

After battling the fire for at least three hours, firefighters summoned aerial help. Planes flew over the affected area and dropped water onto the flames. Firefighters credited the move with finally getting the flames knocked down. However, they were still on the scene at 10 p.m. yesterday.
