Local jobless rate drops

NEW CASTLE — The unemployment rate in Lawrence County dropped nearly a percentage point in February, according to the latest statistics available.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported that the seasonally adjusted rate was 8.0 percent. January’s rate was 8.8 percent.

A year ago — February 2012 — the rate was 7.7 percent.

The rate in Pennsylvania for February was 8.1 percent and the U.S. rate was 7.7.

Surrounding counties had the following rates for February: Beaver, 7.4; Butler, 6.6; Mercer 8.9 and the Pittsburgh area, 7.4.
