Games to begin Friday for local playoff teams

NEW CASTLE — Seven Lawrence County teams learned their playoff fate when the WPIAL announced its boys and girls basketball pairings Tuesday. Games for two local teams — the Neshannock girls and Union boys — begin Friday. The pairings, announced at the Doubletree Hotel in Green Tree, are:

FRIDAY

•(GIRLS) Neshannock vs. West Shamokin, 6:30 p.m. at Highlands

•(BOYS) Union vs. Quigley Catholic, 8 p.m. at Aliquippa

SATURDAY

•(BOYS) Neshannock vs. Apollo-Ridge, noon at Highlands

•(BOYS) Mohawk vs. Serra Catholic, 3 p.m. at Chartiers Valley

TUESDAY

•(GIRLS) Mohawk vs. Beaver-Chartiers-Houston winner, time and site to be determined

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 20

•(BOYS) New Castle vs. Latrobe, time and site to be determined

•(GIRLS) Union vs. Winchester Thurston, time and site to be determined

The Lawrence County commissioners have decided to solicit proposals for the private operation of the county jail. Good idea?

Yes. If it’s a more efficient way to run the jail, I’m all for it.
No. I think there would be too many questions of liability for the county.
Not sure. The county seems to be doing a good job of running the jail now. Why break it if it’s not broken?
