More people out of work in county

NEW CASTLE — The unemployment rate in Lawrence County went up in December, according to the latest statistics available.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported that the seasonally adjusted rate was 8.4 percent. November’s rate was 8 percent.

A year ago — December 2011 — the rate was 8.1 percent.

The rate in Pennsylvania for December was 7.9 percent and the U.S. rate was 7.8.

Surrounding counties had the following rates for December: Beaver, 8; Butler, 6.8; Mercer 8.3 and the Pittsburgh area, 7.3.

The Lawrence County commissioners have decided to solicit proposals for the private operation of the county jail. Good idea?

Yes. If it’s a more efficient way to run the jail, I’m all for it.
No. I think there would be too many questions of liability for the county.
Not sure. The county seems to be doing a good job of running the jail now. Why break it if it’s not broken?
