Man heads to court in rape case

NEW CASTLE — A Honduran man accused of a Christmas morning rape has waived his charges to court.

Shenango Township police charged Eddin Rolando Garcia-Zeron, 35, with rape, aggravated assault and indecent assault. He remains in the Lawrence County jail on $25,000 bond.

Court officials said the services of a certified translator were secured for Wednesday’s preliminary hearing.

According to court documents, police were called to the Super 8 Motel on New Butler Road at 9 a.m. Dec. 25 following an altercation between a man and a woman who did not speak English.

Police said they learned from a third party that the woman claimed to have been raped by the man at 6 p.m. Dec. 24, and again at 1 a.m. Dec. 25. Through a translator, she told police she fought the man off at approximately 7 a.m. Dec. 25.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
