NEW CASTLE —
The project to replace a bridge on Route 551 in Little Beaver Township is scheduled to begin next week.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, work to remove and replace the bridge between Gilmore Road and Route 351 is planned to start Jan. 7, weather permitting.
Route 551 will be closed in the bridge area around the clock from 6 a.m. Jan. 7 through early June to allow the work to proceed. It’s estimated about 900 vehicles use this area of Route 551 on an average day.
PennDOT is encouraging residents to find alternate routes. Official detours will be posted for through traffic.
For northbound cars and small trucks, the detour will send vehicles west on Route 351 into Ohio, where the road becomes Route 617. From there, motorists will be directed onto Route 108 and then back to Route 551. The southbound detour is the same in the opposite direction.
A different detour is required for larger trucks. Northbound, they will take Route 351 into Ohio, then follow Route 617 to Route 170. The detour then turns right onto Route 630, which becomes Route 317 in Pennsylvania. From there, traffic will return to Route 551. The detour is the same in the opposite direction for southbound traffic.
The prime contractor for the bridge replacement project is Mekis Construction Corp. of Fenelton.
Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra time when traveling through the area.
