Blind man robbed on North Hill, police say

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police are investigating a report that a blind man was robbed on Highland Avenue.

The victim told police he and his seeing-eye dog were walking in the 500 block of Highland Avenue about 6:45 p.m. Sunday when he was approached by a man. The man said he had fallen on hard times and asked for $2 for gas money.

The victim said he put his hand into his pocket to hold on to his money, but the individual took it from his hand. He told police he’d had about $35.

He said the man told him he would purchase gasoline and return to give him a ride home. However, the victim told police, the man returned later, handed him a plastic bag and left.

The victim said he walked to a convenience store in the area, with the bag, and called police.

Witnesses at the store told police a man had been hanging around the store begging for money and had asked the clerk for a plastic bag.
