Bomb squad responds to Hickory bank robbery

NEW CASTLE — The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called in to assist with a bank robbery in Hickory Township Monday.

A man who robbed the First National Bank branch at the corner of Routes 108 and 388 had a package and told tellers it was a bomb.

Lt. Tom Dubovi of the Pennsylvania State Police said early Monday afternoon that the man left the package inside the bank. The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m.

Bank employees were evacuated and moved across the street. The bank was empty as the bomb squad was awaited Monday afternoon.

Dubovi said the man demanded money and received an unspecified amount. He then fled on foot across Route 388 into the Citgo parking lot, where bank personnel lost sight of him.

No one was injured in the incident.

Firefighters and ambulance personnel were on standby in the area, Dubovi said. The bank is near the site of the Lawrence County Fairgrounds, where the annual county fair began Monday.

Traffic was open in the area Monday afternoon.
