County declares state of emergency in preparation for major storm

NEW CASTLE — Lawrence County has joined Pennsylvania’s other counties in declaring a state of disaster emergency

The action was in anticipation of dire forecasts of a major storm hitting the East Coast as Hurricane Sandy makes landfall.

The Lawrence County commissioners ordered the state of emergency Monday morning. The move, made at the request of Gov. Tom Corbett, will allow state officials to request federal funding and other assistance for the county if needed.

Rain and high winds are expected to hit Lawrence County Monday night and into Tuesday. Widespread power outages are anticipated from the storm in several East Coast states.
