NEW CASTLE —
Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a call last night at the Inmetco plant in Ellwood City.
A call was put out around 6:45 p.m. for a major response to the plant, which recovers various metals through recycling processes.
The original call said there was a reaction to lithium batteries at the plant, producing smoke inside the building. When firefighters arrived, scanner calls said multiple explosions were heard inside the structure.
As a result, firefighters remained outside early in their response, fighting the fire.
Among the departments that responded to the site off Fountain Avenue were Ellwood City, Shenango, Frisco and Franklin Township. Crews from the various departments worked in shifts to douse the site.
By 8:35 p.m., the fire was under control and Inmetco officials were evaluating the scene. Columbia gas also was called in to shut off service to the plant during the incident.
