Man hospitalized after North Beaver crash

New Castle News

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle man remains hospitalized after his vehicle struck another Friday morning.

A spokeswoman for St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown said yesterday that Robert J. Kennedy, 73, was still in the facility’s surgical intensive care unit.

State police said Kennedy was southbound on Mount Air Road, North Beaver Township, about 10 a.m. when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by Robert E. Smith, 34, of Beaver Falls.

Smith, who was northbound, told police he had seen the oncoming car and attempted to steer to the right but could not avoid the collision. Police said Kennedy’s front bumper hit the front of the truck and his car came to rest sideways across both lanes of traffic.

Police said Kennedy was not wearing a seat belt. Officers said Smith and his three passengers — ages 13, 12 and 9 — were wearing seat belts and did not report injuries.

Police were assisted by North Beaver Volunteer Fire Department, Noga Ambulance and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
