Alleged shoplifter facing assault charges

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle woman was arrested for allegedly trying to shoplift candy and assaulting a security guard and a policeman.

Police said she also assaulted a store employee.

New Castle police charged Elizabeth Paula-Jahn Nelson, 22, who has addresses at 111 Carr St. and Apt. 3, 327 Crescent Ave., with two counts each of aggravated assault and harassment, and one count each of simple assault, public drunkenness, retail theft and disorderly conduct.

Officers were called around 6:20 p.m. Dec. 19 to the Family Dollar store at 100 S. Jefferson St. regarding an alleged shoplifting incident.

They arrived to find Nelson running from a security guard, they said, adding she told police the guard had assaulted her. A witness told officers Nelson had tried to steal 10 boxes of candy.

When police placed her in their cruiser, Nelson tried to kick an officer, according to reports.

A store employee told police Nelson had been arrested previously for shoplifting and he had seen her put several boxes of candy into her jacket. He confronted her and she gave the candy back, box by box, he said, but then tried to push him, punch him in the face and screamed rape. He said she then kicked him in the groin.

A bystander who tried to assist said Nelson had slapped him in the forehead, pushed him and tried to leave the store.

At the police station, Nelson allegedly kicked two officers as they were taking her personal items from her.

She was placed in a restraint chair twice because of her aggressive behavior, officers said.

Nelson was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who lodged her in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.

Milwaukee catcher Martin Maldonado has been suspended five games for sucker punching Pittsburgh’s Travis Snider during a bench clearing brawl on Sunday. You OK with that suspension?

Yes. Seems fair.
No. Baseball NEVER gets it right in these situations. Should have been at least 20 games for his sucker punch into a pile of players.
Not sure, but I’d love to see baseball be like hockey and allow two guys to fight for a while before breaking it up. Let’s see how tough Maldonado is then.
