NEW CASTLE —
Two North Hill youths ages 14 and 16 were arrested after allegedly burglarizing a home.
The older one also had suspected marijuana in his backpack, New Castle police reported.
According to police, the house that was burglarized is in the 100 block of East Garfield Avenue and is occupied by a elderly woman.
Police were called to the home around 5 p.m. Friday, where a witness said he had been walking and saw a juvenile climb through her window. He said he knows the resident is older and was not at home.
He said he looked into the open window and could hear two voices talking about how much gold and coins were in the house.
The witness then climbed into the window and yelled at the two to leave. He said he went upstairs and saw the two boys, and one climbed through an open window, onto the back porch roof, then ran toward Sheridan Avenue.
Police found a basketball on the back porch and sandals in the kitchen.
The witness told police he knows both juveniles because they live in his neighborhood.
Family and neighbors identified the teens and they were arrested. They were released to family.
Upon seizing the suspected marijuana from the older youth’s backpack, police said they also found numerous necklaces in his possession.
The younger boy was interviewed with his mother and grandfather present. He told police he and his friend had gone to the house and his friend had climbed into the front window and let him in through the back door. He said he waited inside the back door while the older teen went upstairs. He said he heard the witness yell at them and ran as his friend left through the upstairs window.
He told police the sandals belong to him.
The 14-year-old said he went into the house because several other juveniles had threatened to assault him if he did not bring them “things.” He said they were hiding in the weeds behind the house.
Police are filing juvenile petitions against the two for burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal trespass and conspiracy to commit criminal trespass. The older youth also could face drug-related charges.
