NEW CASTLE —
A Shenango man who allegedly yanked a gold cross necklace off an 87-year-old woman is in jail.
New Castle police said the incident occurred at the woman’s home in the 1100 block of Cunningham Avenue around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. They have arrested Michael James Yesko, 23, of 2936 Center Church Road in connection with the incident.
The woman told police a man with a full beard and dark hair that was slicked forward knocked at the door asking for her son. She said her son wasn’t there, and the man asked her to let him into the house and write down a phone number for him. Before the woman handed him the paper, he grabbed her gold chain with a cross on it from her neck, then left in a truck.
A neighbor across the street said the driver was in a GMC Jimmy. The neighbor said he had knocked on a door across the street and was looking into the rafters of the house on the porch, she said. Then he knocked on the woman’s door.
Police put out a bulletin with the man’s description, and about five minutes later another patrolman pulled the car over.
He was identified as Yesko and admitted to police he had knocked on the woman’s door asking for her son.
The woman and the neighbor went to the station and identified Yesko. His car was towed and will be searched for the necklace, police said.
Yesko is charged with robbery, theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned by District Judge David B. Rishel, who set his bond at $50,000. He is in the Lawrence County jail.
