Landslide closes street for second time

NEW CASTLE — Neshannock Avenue Extension was closed for about 90 minutes Sunday following a landslide.

Mike Rooney, New Castle’s public works director, said three or four trees and several sizable rocks came down the hillside and onto the street.

“I had to call out someone with a front-end loader,” he said. “It took him about an hour and a half to reopen the road.”

That area, Rooney said, “is almost straight up and down. There is no gradient there.”

Rooney said the area involved — along Neshannock Creek just past Neshannock Village — is almost the same location of the last land slide following Hurricane Sandy.

“The area is still wet,” he said, adding the area might also be fed by a natural spring.
