WPIAL Boys Playoffs: Union to face senior-laden Quigley squad
Success in the WPIAL playoffs isn’t anything new for the Union High boys basketball team. The Scotties are making their second-straight trip to the district playoffs and fifth in the six-year run for coach Dave Smialowski. Union has won at least one playoff game in each of those years except one (2010).
Union schools approve armed guards
Both schools in the Union Area School District will have armed security guards in the new year. At a special meeting yesterday, the school board unanimously approved the hiring of an armed security guard for the elementary school at a salary of $11.50 per hour. Prior to the vote, the board interviewed three candidates for the position in executive session.

Residents who plan to build homes in Union Township could be eligible for a tax break. The Union Area School Board has adopted a resolution authorizing exemption of school property taxes for new home construction assessed at $100,000 or greater.
Shooting Aftermath: Local school districts gear up for crisis plan reviews
Lawrence County’s district attorney is planning a school safety summit of sorts after the first of the year. Joshua Lamancusa said he will meet with district officials, security guards and police to determine what security measures are in place at local schools and what can be done to enhance them.
Union school board hears technology report
The Union school district’s 11th-grade literature class is in a pilot program for using iPads. The program is part of the district’s commitment to advancement in instructional technology.
Big Seven Conference: Lancers and Scotties come out on top
It was a record-setting year for the Neshannock High football team. And, a record-tying run for Union. The Lancers claimed a share of the Big Seven Conference championship and won their first-ever WPIAL playoff game. They advanced all the way to the WPIAL Class A semifinals where they fell to powerhouse Clairton. Meanwhile, the Scotties won their first playoff game since 1979. They dropped a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal matchup to Sto-Rox, 33-8.

WPIAL Playoffs: Preview of Union vs. Sto-Rox
The Big Seven Conference will be on display in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Conference foes Union High and Sto-Rox won last week in the opening round of the district’s playoffs, earning a matchup at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mars High School.

WPIAL Football Playoffs: Union ready to battle Beth-Center
One drought is ready to end for the Union High football program. Another one is just 48 minutes from coming to an end. The 10th-seeded Scotties (6-3) are appearing in the WPIAL playoffs for the first time since the 2003 season. They are set to meet seventh-seeded Beth-Center at 7:30 p.m. today at California High School in Class A action.
