Union board holds line on taxes, cuts teacher
The Union school board adopted its 2012-13 budget with no property tax increase. The board voted 7-1 in favor of the $10.3 million budget, which reflects a $75,000 deficit between anticipated revenues and expenditures. Kathy Duncan cast the no vote and John Pacella was absent.

College Baseball: Markus Allen stars for Penn State-Beaver
Markus Allen was stellar for the Penn State-Beaver baseball team this year. Allen, a junior right fielder from Union High, ranked third on the Nittany Lions in batting average with a .364 mark. He posted 11 doubles, five triples and a pair of home runs with 26 RBIs.

Union could see cuts to avoid tax hike
The Union Area School District is looking at ways to cut expenses in order to avoid a tax increase. A budget for the 2012-13 school will be introduced at Wednesday’s board meeting, but all aspects of the financial plan are still being discussed, superintendent Dr. Alfonso “Butch” Angelucci said.

Union school board approves oil, gas lease
An agreement has been reached for possible oil and gas drilling on Union school property. The board voted 7-2 to OK the lease with Hilcorp for $3,300 an acre for 48 acres and an 18 percent royalty fee should the company drill there.
