Sophomores in spotlight at annual career fair
The future was on display yesterday at The Scottish Rite Cathedral, and all the participants were feeling good about it. More than 700 sophomores from area high schools descended on the spacious site for the fourth annual Lawrence County Business and Industry Career Fair.

Superintendent details Union’s AYP results
The Union Area School District has achieved the state’s Adequate Yearly Progress for 2012, for the ninth consecutive year. Superintendent Dr. Alfonso “Butch” Angelucci presented the results at Wednesday’s school board meeting, pointing out that the elementary and high schools each fell short of AYP by one category.

State student council conference coming here
Final preparations are in place for the 76th annual Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils state conference. The event, hosted by Laurel and Union high schools’ students councils, will be at the Scottish Rite Cathedral and Lawrence County Fairgrounds Nov. 1-3.

High School Football: Union snares inside track to playoffs
Like Moses once did, Union High cleared the first hurdle toward reaching the Promised Land. The Scotties all but wrapped up a WPIAL Class A playoff spot Saturday night with their 33-7 Big Seven Conference win at Shenango.

Union loses, replaces math teacher
Mark Frengel has resigned as sixth-grade math teacher in the Union school district. His resignation was approved unanimously by the school board Wednesday night.

All the scores Wednesday night at Taggart Stadium were of the musical variety rather than touchdowns. The home of New Castle High’s football team was the site of the 33rd annual Lawrence County Marching Band Festival. Laurel High School, under the direction of Nathan Daubenspeck, was the host band.

Union yearbooks now available
Union High School Yearbooks for the Class of 2012 are now available at the high school office. For those who made a $10 deposit, $30 is due. For those who made no deposit, the cost will be $45.

High School Basketball: Squeglia resigns coaching post after perfect season
Union High graduate Dennis Squeglia has raised some eyebrows around the WPIAL. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that Squeglia resigned as Seton-La Salle High girls basketball coach last week, just five months after guiding the team to a perfect season.

Diamonds are forever
If there’s one sport Mark Stanley figured he’d be the head coach of during his career, it was baseball. Yet the veteran mentor is known for his success as a boys high school basketball coach at Union and New Castle. Some others may know him from his more recent roles as co-head coach for Ellwood City’s track and field program or assistant basketball coach for the Wolverines. Stanley hopes people will remember him for another role now.
