Union Township honors fallen son
Yesterday’s prayers and Veterans Day remembrances in Union Township were for all veterans and soldiers. But special recognition was given to fallen Army Staff Sgt. Edward Mills Jr., whose name was unveiled on a monument at the municipal building and on a stone near the flagpole at the high school.
High School Softball: Conforti takes over at Union
There is a new leader in the Union High softball program. Anthony Conforti, 47 of Ellwood City, was hired to replace Gary Trimble as the Lady Scots’ coach. Trimble served as Union’s coach for nine years.
Union teachers, board approve four-year pact
The Union Area School Board and the district’s teachers have approved a four-year contract. By a 9-0 vote Wednesday, the board approved the pact that will run through June 30, 2017.

New school grading system unveiled Friday
The Pennsylvania Department of Education is rolling out its revamped system of grading schools Friday. One thing will be clear immediately: The state will be using two grading systems — one for schools with lots of poor students and another for every other school in the Commonwealth.
Photos, Story: Scottie Way offers road to rewards
Things were done the old Scottie Way on the new Scottie Way yesterday afternoon. The previously unnamed road leading to the front of Union High School has been given that moniker, linking the nickname of Union sports teams with a new reinforcement support program that will take place at all grade levels in the school district.
New hires get district ‘introduction’
Since the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, Union has hired nine teachers, a guidance counselor and a nurse. During Wednesday’s board meeting, Linda O’Neill, elementary principal who oversees the new teacher induction program, reported on what is being done to introduce the new staff to various aspects of the school district.
Dogs find no drugs at Union High School
Four dogs searched Union High School for drugs yesterday but none were found.
Union loses payroll manager
The Union school district is looking for a new payroll and benefits manager. The board accepted the resignation of Tara Sheffler from that position, effective Aug. 27.
Union teachers working under old contract
The first day of school for students in the Union district is Aug. 26. However, the teachers — who will have in-service days Aug. 21 and 22 — will head back to the classroom under the terms of their previous three-year contract, which expired June 30.
