NEW CASTLE —
White lines added the finishing touch to a project started three summers ago at Union High School.
After years of hard work and fundraising efforts, the outdoor basketball court next to the school is now completely re-done.
“I was always up playing at the courts and decided we could use some new hoops, so I organized three-on-three tournaments to raise the money,” said Jordon Rooney, who has headed up the project.
The fundraising efforts did not stop with the new hoops, however.
Last summer, Rooney again organized tournaments to raise money — this time for a new surface.
With the help of Protech Asphalt, Frengel Painting Co. and Pizza Joe’s fundraising assistance, Rooney’s dream is now a reality.
The court, which is the only lighted facility in the township, now boasts new hoops, a blue surface and crisp white lines.
“People have been really excited about the blue because, you know, it’s Union pride. Those are our colors,” Rooney said.
The court, which re-opened last night after painting was complete, is open to anyone in the community.
“I am thankful for the help from everyone and proud of the court,” Rooney said. “I think this court will be good for kids. It will encourage them to play and give them something to do that will keep them out of trouble. I hope it has a positive impact on the community.”
