NEW CASTLE —
The Union Area School District will have a new administrator when the 2014-15 school year starts.
The board voted 8-0 Wednesday night to hire an assistant principal. Debra Allebach was absent.
The position was eliminated during the 2010-11 school year because of budget cuts.
Superintendent Dr. Alfonso “Butch” Angelucci said the board and administration seek an administrator to guide the district toward more instructional leadership and instructional technology.
“That is the direction the district is moving toward, and those are the two areas we feel strongly about and want to enhance,” Angelucci explained.
According to the superintendent, principal Michael Ross now oversees grades five to 12, and in his first year in that role, “has done a fantastic job.”
The district has started advertising for the position and hopes to announce who has been hired as assistant principal at the May 21 regular meeting.
There will be three rounds of interviews with candidates to narrow the field to three, Angelucci said.
The start date for the job is July 1.
“I’m proud of the board’s vision in continuing to make academics and instructional leadership its mission,” Angelucci said. “Adding this position is where we want to go and where we want to be.”
Some teachers also will have input in the decision-making process, he added.
The board also:
•Added Mark Wendel of New Castle, Erin Gerst and Katie Brown, both of Westminster College, and Ashley Hamett of New Castle to the 2013-14 substitute teacher list.
•Approved elementary spring field trips to several locations, including Deer Park/Pymatuning and Carnegie Museum.
