Union loses, replaces math teacher

NEW CASTLE — Mark Frengel has resigned as sixth-grade math teacher in the Union school district.

His resignation was approved unanimously by the school board Wednesday night.

Frengel has accepted the position of assistant principal at Lincoln High School in Ellwood City.

Board president John Bertolino thanked Frengel for the seven years he has worked for the district.

Kylie Gierlach was hired, also unanimously, to replace Frengel, effective immediately.

Gierlach is a New Castle resident who graduated from Neshannock High School. She is a 2012 graduate of Slippery Rock University.

Frengel also served as sophomore class adviser. The board hired Amy Ryan for that position with a stipend of $660.

In other business, the board:

•Approved Tara Sheffler as junior class adviser at a stipend of $660.

•Approved a family medical leave absence for fourth-grade teacher Saesan Mollenkopf, effective Nov. 1.

•Approved board member Debi Allebach as a delegate for the Pennsylvania School Board Association’s state conference in Hershey from Oct. 16 to 19.
