High School Basketball: Union grad set to coach Kennedy Catholic girls

NEW CASTLE — Chris Mele is taking his 20 years of coaching experience to Kennedy Catholic High School.

Mele, a Union High graduate, was announced yesterday as the head coach of the Lady Golden Eagles basketball team.

“We are pleased to welcome coach Mele to the Kennedy Catholic community,” Father Marc Stockton, president of the Shenango Valley Catholic School System said. “His wealth of experience, commitment to enriching the lives of student athletes on and off the court and understanding of the philosophy that guides our athletic programs make him the ideal person for this very important post. We’re confident he’ll continue to build upon the Lady Golden Eagles’ unparalleled winning tradition.”

Mele’s prior coaching experience includes serving as varsity assistant for the Sharon boys (2009-2011), Reynolds girls (1998-2000) and the head coach of the Union seventh-grade boys team (1993-1996). He also was the Shenango girls head coach (2001-2005) and has coached elementary girls and boys in the Hermitage School District  (2012-2013). In addition, Mele is the head coach and director of the Orange Crush, a western Pennsylvania AAU program, for fourth- and fifth-grade boys and seventh-grade girls.

Now, Mele will hope to successfully lead a  perennial powerhouse. Kennedy Catholic holds 16 PIAA District 10 titles and one state championship (2001) to its name since 1975.

Mele, who will not hold a teaching position at the school, is a 1992 graduate of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is the Chief Operations Officer of Pyrotecnico, Inc. in New Castle.

Are you concerned enough about the Heartbleed bug on the Internet to change all of your social media and website passwords?

Yes. It’s always a good idea to change passwords regularly anyway. I just have so many, I’m not sure where to start.
No. From what I’ve read, companies are still trying to figure out how to fix the flaw. The bad guys will just have access to my NEW passwords, too.
Not sure, but I blame Al Gore. He invented the Internet, right? How’s he going to get us out of this mess?
