Union superintendent hired in Butler County

NEW CASTLE — The superintendent of the Union school district is moving on.

Dr. Alfonso A. “Butch” Angelucci was named superintendent of the Slippery Rock school district at its board meeting Monday.

Angelucci was hired unanimously for a three-year contract that runs from July 1 through June 30, 2017. His salary for the 2014-15 school year is $122,000, plus benefits, according to Paul Cessar, Slippery Rock’s business manager/board secretary.

His current salary is $108,000.

Angelucci replaces Dr. Kathleen Nogay, who is retiring June 30.

“This is an opportunity that came up. I am excited about the challenges that await me in a new and different school district.”

Angelucci also praised the Union district.

“I appreciate the dedication and passion of the entire school community to their children from birth to grade 12. It’s a hallmark of the school district.”

Samantha Laverty, Union’s business manager, said the board and staff were notified Tuesday of Angelucci’s hiring at Slippery Rock.

That district consists of four buildings — Moraine and Slippery Rock elementary schools and Slippery Rock middle and high schools.

There are about 800 students in the Union schools but 2,100 in the Slippery Rock district, which is about 135 square miles, Angelucci noted.

Before going to Union in 2009, he was assistant superintendent in the Ellwood City school district.

Angelucci received his bachelor of science in education degree from Slippery Rock University, his master’s degree in education and education leadership from George Mason University and his doctorate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Attempts to reach Polly Shaw, president of the Slippery Rock school board, were unsuccessful.

Union’s school board has its committee-of-the-whole meeting tonight, at which time an executive session will be called to discuss Angelucci’s departure. The board meets in regular session May 21.
