High School Softball: Conforti takes over at Union

NEW CASTLE — There is a new leader in the Union High softball program.

Anthony Conforti, 47 of Ellwood City, was hired to replace Gary Trimble as the Lady Scots’ coach. Trimble served as Union’s coach for nine years.

Conforti was an assistant coach at Ellwood City Lincoln under Gary Rozanski prior to accepting the head coaching position at Union and also has served as an assistant football coach at Mohawk and Riverside.

“I’m real excited,” said Conforti, a 1984 Riverside High graduate. “This is my first head coaching job at the high school level. I’m going to bring some changes to the program. That’s what I was hired for and hopefully, we start a new tradition at Union.”

Conforti, who is just the third coach in the Lady Scots’ history, is impressed with his players after just two meetings with them.

“I’ve met with the girls already and they’re showing a lot of enthusiasm,” he said. “There’s a lot of energy. I’ve talked to the seniors because I expect a lot of them. I’m going to put a lot on their shoulders, because this is their team. In my two meetings with the girls, their eyes stayed on me during the entire meeting and I moved around a lot. That’s a tremendous asset when you’re dealing with 22 or 23 girls in one room, so I think they’re very excited.”

The new Union coach doesn’t want to commit to a particular style of play until he see his players in action this spring.

“I don’t know what the girls can do yet,” said Conforti, who works for Valspar (a paint company) in Rochester. “I haven’t seen too much of what they’ve done before. Since Ellwood is in a different section, I’ve never had the opportunity to see Union play. I’m excited to see what we have. I don’t know if we have home-run hitters or slappers. The girls look athletic and look like they have good ability. It’s my job to bring it out in them.”

Conforti also believes it’s his job to help his team become better people on and off the diamond.

“We want to be competitive,” he said. “I truly believe in team unity. There’s always a standard of excellence we’ll strive for. Sometimes, that isn’t reflected in wins and losses.”

Conforti will get his first official look at the Lady Scots on March 3 when spring sports can begin practicing.

“I know it’s only November, but I’m excited to get started,” said Conforti, who will be assisted by Frank Pate, Stephanie Leisie and his daughter Alexandra Conforti. “We play in a tough section. There’s a lot of good competition both locally and down in Beaver County. We’re definitely going to compete.”

Are you concerned enough about the Heartbleed bug on the Internet to change all of your social media and website passwords?

Yes. It’s always a good idea to change passwords regularly anyway. I just have so many, I’m not sure where to start.
No. From what I’ve read, companies are still trying to figure out how to fix the flaw. The bad guys will just have access to my NEW passwords, too.
Not sure, but I blame Al Gore. He invented the Internet, right? How’s he going to get us out of this mess?
