NEW CASTLE — One child died and another was injured when they were struck by a truck Sunday afternoon.

The two boys were playing in a yard on Winslow Avenue around 2:15 p.m. Police did not identify the children Sunday night.

Witnesses said a yellow pickup went up a bank at 941 Winslow Ave., near the corner of Stanton Avenue on New Castle’s East Side.

After striking a 7-year-old and 9-year-old, the truck went back onto the road, crossed the street and ended up in the yard at 928 Winslow.

New Castle police identified the driver as Virgil Coonfare, 66. They said he is being charged with one count of homicide by motor vehicle and additional charges are pending.

The younger child’s injuries were fatal, police said, and the older boy was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

In addition to New Castle police and fire departments, the Shenango Township police responded to the accident.

The side of the truck indicated it belongs to Corcon Industrial Painting, which is at 3763 McCartney Road in Lowellville, Ohio. However, the truck had a Pennsylvania license plate.

There was a white dog in the truck and officials summoned an animal control officer to remove it.

No other information was available Sunday night.
