Pulaski officer honored for heroic efforts

NEW CASTLE — A Pulaski Township patrolman was named April 2013’s Officer of the Month by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Randall Courson was leaving duty the night of Jan. 4 when he saw headlights, then noticed they had disappeared. He came upon a car that had crashed into Deer Run and responded in time to save one of the teens in the vehicle.

The accident claimed the life of 15-year-old Shane McQuiston of Garner Road, Pulaski Township. The driver, Ethan Seeber, 17, of Conestoga Drive, was rescued by police and firefighters and flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Because of the award, Courson was featured in the law enforcement magazine Police Patrol on April 11.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors police who have died in the line of duty. The organization created the Officer of the Month award in 1996 to honor those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

The officers chosen for the award are honored at a special recognition luncheon each May in Washington, D.C., during National Police Week and featured in the fund’s annual calendar.

National Police Week, in memory of all police officers who have died in the line of duty, is being observed this week and was observed Thursday at a ceremony sponsored by the New Castle Police Department. Courson will be honored at the national event next year.

Meanwhile, fund representatives will present him with a plaque at the Pulaski Township Police Department’s second annual benefit glow-in-the-dark golf outing July 20 at Tanglewood Golf Course.

John the Baptist identified himself as “the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’ ” On Saturday, local evangelist Randy Crum once again took a cue from the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah, eschewing the locusts and honey that John was known to munch on but heading out into the wilds to baptize believers and challenge them to share their faith with their community.
