NEW CASTLE — 5K race in Pittsburgh to remember McCarthy
A 5-K race in Pittsburgh in recognition of National Police Memorial Week will remember fallen officer William J. McCarthy IV.
McCarthy, who was a part-time Shenango Township officer and Lawrence County detective and humane officer, will be eulogized at the Pittsburgh Officers Down 5-K, according to one of its organizers, T.J. Burke of the Sharpsburg Police Department. The annual run is Sunday at South Park.
The event is in memory of officers who have died protecting communities and in recognition of those who serve daily.
Opening the ceremony will be Dan Hahn, a corporal with the Cranberry police, who was nearly killed during a high-speed chase in 2011.
A police procession will begin the race at 10 a.m. and departments from Lawrence County are invited to participate.
Registration is at 8 a.m.
Anyone wanting to enter may register at www.positivemovementz.com.
Bingo games canceled
Shenango Township and South New Castle Borough have canceled bingo this week.
