Suspect’s death from ‘natural causes’

NEW CASTLE — The suspect who died one year to the day after running over two boys — killing one — died of natural causes.

A toxicology report on Virgil E. Coonfare, 67, of Lawrence Manor, was ordered by the coroner. It revealed nothing out of the ordinary.

“Death was due to natural causes,” Richard Johnson, Lawrence County deputy coroner, said.

Coonfare died Nov. 25 in Jameson Hospital’s emergency room.

Police said Coonfare lost control of his truck and ran over Ozzy Velez, 9, and Octavius Stone, 7, as the two boys played in front of Ozzy’s grandmother’s house at 941 Winslow Ave.

At the time of Coonfare’s death, both Johnson and Lawrence County Coroner Russell Noga noted the man had suffered from health problems and had been under the care of doctors at the Butler Veterans Administration Hospital.
