Mercer County group salutes officer
Another tribute for William J. McCarthy is coming from the Humane Society of Mercer County.
According to Sherryl Giles, the organization’s president, the group is making a donation to the Lawrence County Humane Society in McCarthy’s name.
McCarthy was killed in a traffic accident May 2 while on duty with Shenango Township police, where he had worked part time. He also was a Lawrence County humane officer and had been a policeman in Grove City, Mercer County.
The Humane Society of Mercer County is building a new full-service facility that will provide veterinary care,” Giles said. It is offering the Lawrence County organization $100 in free care every year for the number of years McCarthy served as a police officer.
Giles, who is a retired Hermitage policewoman and now works as an officer at the Penn State Shenango campus, said some members of her organization had dealings with McCarthy and wanted to do something in his memory.
