NEW CASTLE —
The city of New Castle has begun its search for an economic development director.
Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo has informed council that the city will advertise on a regional basis, which will include the Cleveland, Youngstown and Pittsburgh areas as well as Lawrence County.
In addition, the mayor has a search committee made up of himself, business administrator Stephanie Dean, a council member and a member of the business community. Councilman Ed Yerage volunteered to be council’s representative.
Hiring of a director is one of the initiatives in the city’s Act 47 recovery plan. The plan outlines the qualifications and duties of the director.
Mastrangelo said his target date for hiring someone is July 1, even though the recovery plan has set a deadline of Oct. 31.
The salary for the position in 2013 budget is $70,000, although the city would pay half at that at most if the person begins on July 1.
The director will head a restructured community and economic development department. It will include community development, code enforcement, zoning and planning.
Tammi Gibson had been director, but is serving as community development coordinator at a salary of $50,000.
Gibson is administering grants, Mastrangelo said, adding code enforcement, zoning and planning are not part of her responsibilities.
