NEW CASTLE — Sheetz plans to break ground in May for a new store in Union Township.

Dave Hazelett, Sheetz director of real estate, said Tuesday that construction is expected to begin in mid-May with an anticipated opening Nov. 2

He said that an area of wetlands on the site, which was a major stumbling block for construction, has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for relocation to a wetlands area behind Lowe’s.

The 6,558-square-foot convenience store and gasoline station will be built on 2.79 acres on Route 224 at Dworman Road, which is the access road to the Lowe’s, Sears and Tractor Supply shopping area.

The store anticipates hiring 40 full- and part-time workers initially and that number may later be adjusted up slightly, Hazelett said.

Sheetz Inc. is a family-owned convenience store chain based in Altoona.
