Jailed suspect linked to vehicle thefts

NEW CASTLE — Germane C. Hunter, 22,  who also has a New Castle address, is accused of trying to heist 15 vehicles from Car Connection in Union Township in February.

Union Township police said the used car dealership reported Feb. 13 that someone tried to take a 2004 Dodge gray-over-silver diesel pickup truck from the lot and damaged the truck’s ignition and steering column.

That same afternoon, Shenango Township police recovered a 2003 Dodge pickup truck and a stolen car. Meanwhile, Car Connection had contacted the police to report damage to 14 other vehicles on the lot. Damages were to door handles, lock cylinders and steering columns, and police found a cell phone on the driver’s seat of one of the cars.

Investigators learned that the phone had been stolen, and  tracked the owner who could identify all photos on the phone except for some pictures of several men.

Those photos were shown to New Castle police, who identified one of the men as Hunter, who had used the phone to take a picture of himself in a mirror. Another individual also was also identified, and he told police that

Hunter had told him that he got a truck and was going to get more cars.

Police interviewed Hunter in the Lawrence County jail on May 16, and he denied involvement with Car Connection’s vehicles, but admitted that he had and used the stolen phone.

He said he got it from a friend and that he didn’t know   it was stolen.

Hunter was charged yesterday with theft, two counts of receiving stolen property, 14 counts of criminal mischief and one count of unauthorized use of automobiles.
