Dry, windy conditions increase fire dangers

NEW CASTLE — Lawrence County’s emergency management director has some advice for local residents.

Think before you burn.

Brian Melcer urged the public to take weather and related conditions into consideration when it comes to burning. He added they also should pay attention to local ordinances that restrict burning to certain days or times.

Melcer pointed out Sunday was a “red alert” day in terms of fire dangers, not only because of high winds, but also because of dry conditions.

This time of year, Melcer explained, there is considerable dead, dry material in wooded areas, contributing to the fuel available for brush fires.

In recent days, fire departments throughout Lawrence County have been called out to multiple brush fires, although Sunday’s in Shenango Township was the largest.

And Monday afternoon, a call came in, indicating that blaze had rekindled.
