Woman dies in crash near Bessemer

NEW CASTLE — A New Middletown, Ohio, woman was killed Saturday in a traffic accident just west of Bessemer.

Judith Heaven, 68, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma at 8:45 p.m. by Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Rich Johnson.

She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Ralph, no age available, who was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Johnson said he was told Ralph Heaven was conscious at the scene and his injuries did not appear life-threatening. Hospital officials declined to give any information.

The driver of the other car, Stanley Shiderly, 62, of New Bedford, initially declined ambulance transport, but ultimately was taken by Medevac to Jameson Hospital. A hospital official said he was not admitted.

According to police, Shiderly was traveling north on State Line Road and Ralph Heaven car was westbound on Pa. Route 317 at the time of the crash. Johnson said the accident is under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.

One of the cars hit a pole, and power lines were down, reportedly causing a power outage.

The intersection has been the site of multiple accidents, including one in which another woman died a few years ago.

The North Beaver Township police and fire departments were assisted by Pennsylvania State Police, the Bessemer Volunteer Fire Department, Penn Power and Medevac.
