Council selects new member

NEW CASTLE — Paul Stefano was appointed to New Castle City Council Thursday night by a unanimous vote of the four members.

Stefano, 39, a history teacher at New Castle High School, fills a vacancy for a two-year term that will expire at the end of 2015.

Seven city residents submitted letters of interest for the position, but Stefano’s name was the only one placed in nomination by council.

He was sworn into office immediately by city clerk Melinda Parenti and participated in voting on the remainder of council’s agenda.

The vacancy was created with Councilman Anthony Adamo’s acceptance of a four-year term on Jan. 6. Adamo was elected to both four- and two-year terms in November.

Stefano formerly served as an aide to state Rep. Chris Sainato and is a current member of the Democratic State Committee.

Before the vote, he said that through his involvement with the Democratic party and labor, he has traveled around the state, meeting many people.

“Their problems are very much like ours,” he said. “I think I can bring some ideas.”

Stefano also previously served on the city personnel board and on the New Castle Area Transit Authority.

After he was sworn in, he said, “I just want to thank the other members for their confidence.”

Essentially, all four council members said they looked at the applications and determined Stefano was the best person for the position.

The others who submitted applications were: the Rev. William Schafer, who ran for the seat last year; Silk Alderette, a substitute teacher; Robert K. McCartt, a certified public accountant; James Russell Browne, director of business development for Affordable Comfort Inc. of Moon Township; Charles Francis Greene, a retiree from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections; and Paul Funera, whose most recent position was plant technician for Verizon.
