Storm Aftermath: Roads closed in Lawrence County

NEW CASTLE — The Lawrence County Public Safety department reported road closings throughout the county following Wednesday’s storm.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation closed portions of two roads Wednesday, but have since reopened them.

PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said Moravia Street from Reynolds Street to Gardner Avenue was closed to clear debris from one side of the bridge.

He also said Savannah Road extension between Union Valley Road and Pennsylvania Avenue was closed because of flooding and downed trees.

The Lawrence County Housing Authority is assessing the damage to part of a 25-foot-high hillside at Brinton Hill that slid down along East Washington Street. Mud slid onto both the sidewalk and street.

The street had been cleared, but Gene DiGennaro, authority executive director, said they had to wait until the mud on the sidewalk dried before removing it. He said there was about a foot and a half of mud.

DiGennaro said the authority’s architect plans to meet with him to determine how to correct the hillside.
