IN CHARGE: Shenango hires police superintendent

Bill Phillips was appointed Shenango Township police superintendent Wednesday.

The 54-year-old Phillips, a resident of the township for 50 years, will begin his duties Friday in the newly created position.

An advisory committee reviewed eight applications and made its recommendation to the supervisors, who made the appointment.

The supervisors will set his salary at the township’s reorganizational meeting, scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday. Benefits will be made available to him.

In addition to overseeing a department of five full-time and three part-time officers, Phillips will handle administrative duties, grant work and paperwork and will do patrolling, according to supervisor chairman Larry Herman. He will wear a uniform.

The township has been without a police chief since November 2008, when David Tresky was dismissed by the supervisors. Tresky, who was hired in May 2008, has filed a lawsuit against the township. He is seeking in excess of $50,000 in compensatory and punitive damages, plus attorney’s fees and costs.

Phillips retired from the state police in October after serving since 1985. His main duties were patrolling, but he spent about six years in the crime unit and two to three years in the community service department.

He also was involved with installing computer systems with data bases 10 years ago.

Phillips and his wife, Brenda, have a son and daughter.
