The 2008 edition of the Western Pennsylvania Balloon Quest featured its Nite Glow event last night at Scotland Meadows Park in Union Township. The hot-air balloons lighted the skies while anchored to the ground.
Seven balloon operators from Pennsylvania and Ohio took part. They ignited their balloons’ burners in sequences that resemble strands of Christmas lights – only much bigger. The burners inflate the balloon and with several flame bursts highlight its patterns.
Karen Pfahles, a Union Township resident, brought her cousin Kristen Carlson of Knoxville, Tenn., to the five-day festival. “I wanted her to see this,” Pfahles said. “I am fascinated with the balloons.” Carlson, too, was impressed. “It’s really cool. I’ve never seen a hot-air balloon before.”
The Union Township Volunteer Fire Department is hosting the event. Balloon launches begin today, weather permitting. Twenty-one balloons will be involved. Mrozek Financial is the event’s major sponsor.
Highlights also include the Union Lions Pancake Breakfast at the Union Township fire hall from 7 to 11 a.m. tomorrow. A car show, live performances by The Graduates and The Dorals, and fireworks are slated for Sunday.
