New 39-cent stamp to make debut

New Castle News

Lick fast.

Saturday is the last day to use the 37-cent stamp — at least by itself.

Effective Sunday, first-class postage will be 39 cents. In anticipation of that change, the postal service has reprinted the two-cent stamp that had been issued in 2004 to make it easier for customers to use up any remaining 37-cent stamps.

For those who used all their 37s to mail Christmas cards, the new 39-cent stamps — which portray the Statue of Liberty and the American flag — are available.

The new first class stamp, called Lady Liberty and U.S. Flag, shows the head, arm and torch of the famous statue in New York harbor superimposed over a portion of a waving flag.

As with past rate increases, the postal service had to begin work on the new stamp before the size of the increase received final approval. Thus the new stamp will not carry any monetary denomination, but will be valued at 39 cents.

The reissued two-cent stamp, known as Navajo jewelry, shows a painted detail of a Navajo silver and turquoise necklace with sand-cast “squash blossoms” set with polished blue turquoise nuggets.

Customers who don’t want to visit one of the postal service’s 37,000 offices can use the internet at www.usps.com to order stamps or purchase postage for packages. They can also call, toll-free, (800) STAMP24.

The 39-cent first-class stamp is available in panes or booklets of 20, coils of 100, and coils of 3,000 for postal vending machines and business customers.

The two-cent stamp is available in panes of 20.

Postage going up:

What will it cost?

Following are some of the new rates — which take effect tomorrow — for mailing via the U.S. Postal Service. The previous rates are in parentheses:
