Gary Church: I’m not looking for a quicker picker upper — I just want a paper towel

NEW CASTLE — Probably from a childhood trauma that occurred, my wife buys only two rolls of paper towels at a time.

What this means is, we frequently run out of them.

This usually happens when a catastrophic event occurs, and there are no paper towels in sight to use.

This happened to me last week as I was leisurely enjoying my bowl of Special K at the breakfast table.

I glanced over to my right and spotted Stan the Stinkbug hanging on the kitchen curtain.

His friends Stu and Stella Stinkbug were here the night before, and I thought maybe Stan was looking for them.

My favorite way of helping the bugs to pass away is to leave them alone. They then head for my kitchen ceiling light fixture.

It seems they prefer that spot for their finale destination.

That's what happened to Stu and Stella.

Since there were no paper towels, Stan got a reprieve on his life.

I went back to eating breakfast when I noticed a black dot on my arm.

I scratched it to see what it was, and the red stuff came gushing out.

What could I do?

There were no paper towels, and my wife has her cleaning rags all numbered, just in case one shows up missing.

By this time, the flow had grown to the size of a coffee ground.

I looked around for anything I could use as a tourniquet, but saw nothing.

Holding my arm very still, I was able to finish breakfast and wash it off.

Then, it was like a light shining from above, I spotted a folded paper towel that I had set on the top of the fridge at some time in my life.

After I patted my incision dry, I placed Stan in the towel, to give him a gentle squeeze into eternity.

No, my stink bugs don't stink!

To avoid running out of paper towels in the future, I plan on hiding a few spare sheets around the house.

Should you come to visit, and look under the sofa cushion, don't be surprised if you see a paper towel there.

You never know when a catastrophe will occur, and I want to be ready.

Maybe I'll place a spare roll in the oven. She never looks in there.

  • Huston.jpg Greg Huston: Readers (a few anyway) respond on Alvarez

Last week I asked readers to share their thoughts on what the Pirates should do with the struggling Pedro Alvarez and we’ll get to that in a minute. For some background, Alvarez has two years left on his deal and makes a modest salary of 4.25 million this season (modest in terms of baseball salaries as paying me 4.25 million dollars for anything would be gladly accepted). His salary will likely increase the next two seasons through arbitration.

Surprise, surprise, surprise! The big cheese called me, and asked if I would mind if my blogs appeared on Monday, instead of on Tuesday. I had no problem with that.

Where does the time go? Just a moment ago, it was Monday, and now here we sit at the opposite end of another week. Seems like a matter of seconds and this month has slipped off into oblivion. I swear I only blinked and spring had been stripped from our hands. I don't dare close my eyes for another moment’s rest or my whole life may disappear.

To keep my nice figure, I like to go to Forbush's at least once a week. This is also my entertainment for the night.  We sit there for an hour or so, watching people. Last week, a group arrived that I had never seen before.

Johnnyswim. I know, I know. Me neither. I had no idea what that word meant until a couple of months ago, when a friend of mine on Twitter was absolutely gushing about a great concert he had just seen.

The old Couch Potato has been methodically working my way through the hit Netflix series, “House of Cards,” over the past few weeks and let me just say, it’s pretty good.

It's always a tragedy when I have to cover a drowning for The News. I hope I never have to go to Kennedy Mills again for this purpose. It is located at the bottom of a twisty, turning hill on Frew Mill Road.

After 12 amazing years at the New Castle News, it is finally time for me to say goodbye.  I walked through the doors of this building believing that I had found the place I would live out the rest of my days, content in the chaos of deadlines and bylines, inky fingers and editorials.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
